Abstract

559,033. Arc-welding electrodes and holders. PEILLON, P. SARRUF, N., and CASTRO, L. Oct. 23, 1942, No. 14937. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] In metallic arc welding under water, particularly for repairing ships in sea water, a flux coated electrode is provided with a further coating of insulating material capable of excluding water for the full period of immersion and not substantially decomposed by heat of the arc, and the current supplied is in excess of that for use in air. The coating may be applied in liquid form and allowed to solidify and may consist of paraffin wax, spermaceti wax, montan wax, ozokerite, or tallow or drying oils such as linseed oil. The electrode may be connected to the positive terminal of the welding circuit. The flux coating may comprise asbestos non oxide, silicate of soda small quantities of aluminium and nickel and may contain a helical winding of iron wire or yarn. The electrode 18 may be held in a handle comprising an ebonite sleeve 11 containing a metal terminal 12 by a metal plug 14 carried by an ebonite cap 13 screwed into the handle against a rubber gasket 16. The electrode passes through an aperture in a soft rubber band 20 and soft rubber sleeve 19. The insulated cable 21 is soldered to a metal sleeve 22 which is pressed against the end of the terminal 12 by a screwed ebonite plug 23, a watertight joint being effected here by a soft rubber washer 25. An ebonite gland 26 is screwed into the plug 23 and rubber packing washers at 27, 28 are also provided. In a modification the ebonite handle 40 extends round the end of the terminal 41 and the ebonite cap 43 contains a clamping screw 44 which screws into the terminal and clamps the electrode in an aperture therein. The cable 21 is sweated into a thimble 45 screwed into the other end of the terminal 41 and is surrounded by an ebonite sleeve 47 and by a,gland nut 48 screwed on to the thimble, rubber washers at 50 and 51 being also provided.
