Abstract
559,026. Cracking oils. ARNOLD, J. C. (Standard Oil Development Co.). Sept. 15, 1942, No. 13016. [Class 32] Heavy hydrocarbon oils, e.g. the residum produced by distilling off the fractions boiling up to 850‹F from a crude oil, are reduced in viscosity to produce a gas oil by spraying the heated oil, at least partly in the liquid phase, into a chamber into contact with a solid granular material, e.g. hydrocarbon coke, pumice, silica, alumina, " Super filtrol," previously heated to 900-1200‹F., conducting converted products to a separating chamber to separate the powdered material from the vapours, then suspending the separated material in an inert gas and passing it to a regenerating chamber where absorbed hydrocarbons are burnt off by admixture with air, the regenerated material being returned to the reaction chamber. Residuum of an East Texas oil heated to 850-950‹ F., together with steam from line 2, is discharged through a manifold 4 into a reactor 5 where it mixes with coke from a pipe 70. The suspension passes through a pipe 8 to a separator 10 from which the vapours pass through line 14 for further treatment. The separated coke falls through a pipe 12 into a chamber 15 where it is mixed with steam, flue gas or carbon dioxide. Heavy particles are withdrawn through line 20 and the suspension passes to a regenerating chamber 24 to which air is supplied by a pipe 23. Combustion of the hydrocarbon material takes place in the chamber 24 and the suspension passes to a cyclone separator 40 from which the coke particles are fed through a pipe 45 to a dispersion chamber 60 for return to the reactor 5. Specifications 525,443, 538,383, [Group XXXVI], 542,989, and 544,366 are referred to.
