Abstract
558,522. Ironing-machines. UNITED STATES HOFFMAN MACHINERY CORPORATION. Jan. 16, 1942, No. 703. Convention date, Jan. 13, 1941. [Classes 42 (i) and 138 (ii)] Flat work is ironed by a steam-heated surface 11 over which the work is drawn by a substantially air-impervious belt 2 under atmospheric pressure the surface 11 having criss-cross grooves into which open perforations 20 leading to vacuum passages 16 evacuated by a pump. The steam passages 15 wind back and forwards across the bed from two inlets at opposite ends to an outlet at the centre, which is lower to drain off condensed water. To prevent scraping of the goods the rear wall of the grooves is sloped for example as at 34, Fig. 9, and the grooves are preferably one set at an angle of 59 degrees with the transverse axis of the surface and the other at 61 degrees to prevent local glossing of the surface. In a modification the ironing surface may be formed convex in the direction of travel of the belt.
