Abstract
558,311. Repeater systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 18, 1942, No. 13168. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1941. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] In a system in which power current is fed to repeaters in a submarine cable over the cable conductors, the gain of the amplifiers is adjusted by varying the power current. As shown, a very low frequency generator 12, which may furnish a square wave, or a periodically varying resistance is provided in series with the direct current source 11 to furnish an A.C. component the effect of which diminishes in the remote parts of the cable. In the amplifier shown, the anode/cathode voltage is derived from the potential drop in all the heaters in series. The gain is controlled by an indirectly heated thermistor T1 in the #-path. The heater 27 of the thermistor derives current from a resistance 28 in the supply circuit, the effect of changes in the supply current being exaggerated by a directly heated thermistor T2 in series with the coil 27. By providing thermistors of various kinds in different amplifiers, various degrees of control can be exercised at different parts of the cable. Specification 557,028 is referred to.
