Abstract
543,399 Magnesium; utilizing argon. GENTIL, H. L., and ALLOY PROCESSES. Ltd., Aug. 23, 1940, No. 13393. Drawings to Specification. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Groups III and XXVIII] Magnesium is distilled and condensed under reduced pressure by continuously admitting a neutral gas such as argon to the evaporation zone, carrying the vapours by the gas stream to the condensation zone, and continuously withdrawing the neutral gas from the condenser. The reduced pressure may be less than 10 mm. of mercury, preferably not over 4 mm. The argon may be used cyclically, the impure argon withdrawn from the condenser being returned to a liquid air plant. The neon, oxygen, and nitrogen from this plant may be separately used; the nitrogen may be caused to react with calcium carbide for the production of cyanamide as a by-product.
