Abstract

545,057. Electrodeposition of iron. MEHL, E. Dec. 19, 1940, No. 17866. [Class 41] Iron powders are produced by electrolyzing an aqueous solution of a caustic alkali such as sodium, potassium, or barium hydroxide, or a mixture of such caustic alkalies, of a strength exceeding 9 normal at a temperature greater than 100‹C. using anodes of ferrous material, for a period sufficient to build up on the cathode a spongy iron deposit which is detached or collected and if necessary comminuted whilst in a wet state. A low cathode efficiency, i.e. below 0.5. grams of deposit per ampere hour, is preferred, as this tends to produce powdery or spongy deposits. A small quantity of a chloride or sulphate such as sodium chloride, in amount not more than 5 per cent of the caustic alkali present or below 10 grams per litre of electrolyte, may be added to the bath.
