523,479. Detergents ; alkyl aromatic sulphonic acids. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. Jan. 2, 1939, No. 91. Convention date, Jan. 5, 1938. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Non-caking freely-flowing detergents are obtained by drum- or spray-drying an aqueous solution or suspension of a water-soluble salt of an aromatic sulphonic acid and a water-soluble water-softening inorganic detergent salt so as to obtain a flaked or powdered product with a moisture content of 1.5-5.0 per cent. and an apparent S.G. of 0.1-0.5. Aromatic sulphonates specified are the alkali metal sulphonates of benzene, toluene, naphthalene, diphenyl, hydroxy-diphenyl, and alkylated diphenyl, and the alkali metal salts of alkyl benzene mono- and polysulphonic acids. Inorganic salts suitable are sodium sulphate with or without sodium carbonate and Epsom salts. For example, a suspension of 100 lb. of a mixture of dodecyl- and tridecyl-benzene sodium sulphonates, 60 lb. of sodium sulphate, 40 lb. of sodium carbonate, and 4 lb. of Epsom salts in 200 lb. of water is sprayed into a drying chamber. Alkyl aromatic sulphonic acids having 9-15 C. atoms in the alkyl group are obtained by halogenating the suitable kerosene fractions, condensing with the aromatic hydrocarbon, and sulphonating.
