Abstract
527,642. Turning-gear. COSTA, H. DA., and PLESSEY CO., Ltd. April 11, 1939, Nos. 11011 and 31446. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter comprising a driving dog 15 actuated by a power-driven member for axial movement into engagement with the engine shaft and for rotary movement to start the engine, the driving dog is coupled to the powerdriven member by a spring-loaded disengageable clutch 20 and supplementary driving means is arranged to disengage the clutch 20 by its initial rotation and then to rotate the driving dog independently of the power-driven member. As shown, the power-driven member comprises a sleeve 11 rotatably mounted on a piston in a cylinder 10 in which a cartridge can be exploded, as described in Specification 355,022. The sleeve 11 has external and internal helical spines engaging respectively with a fixed member 12 and with a bar 13 connected by the clutch teeth 12 to the sleeve 16 on which the driving dog 15 is formed. The clutch 20 is loaded by a compression spring 27 between a flange 25 on a tubular member 24, having an outward flange 26 engaging a abutment in the sleeve 16, and a nut 29 threaded on a stud 28 riveted in the end wall of a bearing sleeve 22 secured to the bar 13. The supplementary driving means consists of a shaft 40 driven by a starting handle and movable axially against a spring 42 to engage a worm 41 with a worm wheel 37 on a shaft 35 carrying a helical pinion 34. A pinion 32 on the sleeve 16 is driven from the pinion 34 through an idler 33, and the end thrust due to the helical teeth disengages the clutch teeth 20 and engages the driving dog 15 with the engine. The first Provisional Specification describes a construction in which the supplementary driving means may be actuated manually or by an electric motor and comprises a worm wheel is coupled to its shaft by a multi-plate friction clutch to allow slip in the event of backfire on starting ; the shaft is connected to the driving dog by helical gearing including a helical gear ring coupled to the driving dog by spring-loaded plungers.
