Abstract

526,816. Coating metals. ROBERTS, S. T., and TAYLOR, F. March 14, 1939, No. 8203. [Class 82 (ii)] A zinc, zinc alloy or galvanized surface is converted into a paint receptive one by immersing the article in a solution at temperatures of 140-200‹F. containing phosphates of zinc, manganese or cadmium, cobalt and/or nickel and a little free phosphoric acid produced by adding zinc and manganese or cadmium salts, preferably carbonates, and the carbonates of cobalt and/or nickel to a bath of phosphoric acid. If the article has a cadmium, cadmium alloy or galvanized surface, it is immersed in a solution containing the phosphates of zinc, manganese, cobalt and/or nickel prepared in similar fashion to the zinc &c. bath. An oxidizing agent such as sodium perborate, potassium permanganate or sodium nitrate may be added to the bath.
