Abstract

526,688. Glass manufacture ; moulding plastic substances. EVERETT, S. J. March 22, 1939, No. 9051. [Class 56] [Also in Group V] Relates to the method of making barrels for hypodermic syringes, burettes, and like tubular articles by shrinking a glass tube on to a mandrel. According to the invention, the tube is heated in a liquid bath to a temperature above the softening point of the glass and, at the same time, is subjected externally to pressure to cause it to conform to the mandrel. The method may be used also with non-metallic material which becomes plastic at a moderately high temperature. In operation, one end of the tube is closed and, after the mandrel has been inserted, the open end is connected to a suction pump. The tube is then inserted in the heating- bath which may consist of a salt or of a molten metal such as lead. In the latter case, evacuation may be dispensed with as the weight of the metal causes the plastic glass to shrink on to the mandrel. A tube may be shrunk to the required dimensions in stages on a succession of mandrels. Specification 495,798 is referred to.
