[Class 81 (ii)] A socket for an artificial limb comprises a series of longitudinal elements arranged to be secured at one end to an artificial limb and forming at the free ends a socket for the stump, the adjacent elements in the neighbourhood of the free ends being pivotally linked to one another to permit the intended surface formed by the elements to conform to transient variations of the cross section of the stump. As applied to a leg socket, the device consists of a number of upright stays 6 mounted in two-part members 5 secured to ring 4 so as to permit a small movement of the stays. Ring 4 fits upon. the end projection of the artificial leg. In Fig. 5, terminal members 15 for the stays 6 are capable of limited movement about pins 16. The stays are connected by adjustable screw unions 14 to the pivot pins of a series of links 2 constituting a band. The links may be castings as shown, or formed by stampings. The pivot pins are preferably continued as U-shaped prongs 13, those on the pelvic side being flared outwardly so as to provide a yieldable support. A leather lining is connected to the prongs 13 by a lace 19, and may be formed with corrugations to facilitate ventilation. Two specially shaped links 21 may be provided in the band whereby it may have a larger radius of curvature at a desired section, e.g., on the pelvic side so that additional lining may be inserted. A catch enabling the band to be disconnected at a point in its length may be provided. There are attached to the band a rod 18 screw-threaded for engagement with a fitment secured to a waist band, and loops 17 for keeping in position braces which extend inside the cage and engage with the fitment mounted on the upper end of the artificial limb.
