Abstract

502,603. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 19, 1938, No. 30246. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] A lamp 19 is supported within a jacket 10 through its leading-in wires, which are large enouth to conduct heat to maintain the temperature of the ends of the lamp, and is closed at its ends by thin metal members 20 sealed at their edges to the envelope. The jacket has contacts 12, as described in Specification 471,301, [Group XXXVI], and leading-in wires 26, 27 which are clamped or welded in bores in the conductors 16, and hold the lamp terminals 22. The lower terminal 22 may be additionally supported in a well 28 in the jacket. The contacts and terminals are sealed through flexible metal cups 18, 20 into the edges of the hard-glass containers; intermediate glass rings or beads 21 may be used for sealing. The electrodes comprise sintered tungsten particles impregnated with emissive oxide as described in Specification 499,570. A starting electrode is connected to one terminal through a resistance, housed in an insulating casing 30 by means of a metal strip 31, which is embedded in the casing and welded to a lead 16. Mercury, which is completely evaporated during operation to provide an atmosphere of two atmospheres is provided ; starting is facilitated by argon at 6-8 mms. A heat-reflecting material such as platinum paint is provided on the exhausting pip. Nitrogen or air at one atmosphere may be provided in the outer jacket. To maintain the temperature of the lower end of the lamp, the lower end is conical and is coated with platinum paint. Conduction of the heat from the lamp ends may be reduced by undercutting the leads, e.g. as shown at 37, 38. The well 28 may be dispensed with, the lower end of the lamp being registered by a mica star-shaped disc secured to the lower contact 22 by a metal eyelet. The contacts 22 may be replaced by wires and the lower wire may terminate in a spiral housed in the well 28.
