Abstract
491,900. Actuation of switches; indicating leaks in cables. CALLENDER'S CABLE & CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd., and ARMAN, A. N. March 17, 1937, No. 7883. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXVIII] When gas pressure rises in an enclosure 1, bellows 4 are compressed causing plate 8 to rise and cause link 23 to snap over a spring toggle 15, 16 to cose contacts 18, 20. The over travel of toggle link 16 moves link 23 upwards to open a valve 10 allowing the excess gas to pass to the atmosphere through a tube 7. This allows the bellows to expand and open the switch and close the valve 10. The device is described as applied to indicating leakage into an enclosure for a gasfilled cable, when the frequency of operation of the switch as shown on a recording galvanometer shows the magnitude of the leak. Fig. 3 shows an indicating system for three single core cables A, B, C of a three-phase system, in which the enclosures are divided into lengths each provided with a pressure operated switch 36 adapted on operation to ground the corresponding pilot wire a, b or c. This energizes the corresponding relay 24 to give an indication on a three colour thread recording galvanometer G. Thus the magnitude frequency and colour of the indications serve to show respectively the location and magnitude of the leak and in which cable it is present.
