Abstract
497,619. Composition fuel. RINGER, F. Oct. 2, 1937, Nos. 26740. 26741, and 26742. Convention dates, Oct. 7, 1936, Dec. 1, 1936, and Aug. 19, 1937. [Class 50] Spark-ignitible composition fuel for lighters comprises more than 50 per cent of metaldehyde, or other aldehydic or ketonic derivatives or substances giving rise to aldehydic bodies which burn without melting or the formation of smoke or residues, and in addition substances reducing the thermal conductivity of the mass, particularly artificial silk fibres, e.g. ¢-1 cm. long and finely ground cork meal. Binders such as stearin, gelatine, gum-arabic, water-soluble cellulose compounds, substances soluble in organic solvents, such as nitrated, acetyl cellulose or resins in alcoholic solution are employed in proportions preferably less than 7 per cent. Compounds, preferably organic, evolving oxygen when burning may be included together with perfumes, essential oils, &c., such as oil of lavender, borneol, artificial xylol musk, and balsams, and with flame-colouring salts. A protective coating as of one or more layers of collodion may be applied to the fuel which may be in the form of sticks, flexible wicks or thin bands or films. In an example the mixture comprises 76 per cent metaldehyde, 6 per cent each of artificial silk fibres, benzoyl superoxide and collodion, 3 per cent oil of lavender (or 1 of borneol) and 1 per cent each of calcium stearate and fatty acid. Cotton or other vegetable fibres, fibrous nitrated cellulose, or threads of artificial resin may be used with or without artificial silk fibres and polyglyoxal, trioxymethylene, hexamethylenetetramine and certain quinones may replace the metaldehyde. Specification 374,602 is referred to.
