Abstract
Porous silica stones resistant to water are made by mixing porous silica grains, e.g. kieselguhr, an alkaline earth hydroxide, e.g. lime hydrate, water exceeding 70 per cent of the mixture and a water soluble soap. The mixture is poured into moulds and hardened by steam. Resins, fatty acids or naphthenic acid may be used as the soap forming acid. Vegetable or mineral fibres, e.g. jute or asbestos, may be added in amounts of from 8 to 15 per cent of the silica. In an example, 140 kgs. of kieselguhr, 75 kgs. of slaked lime and 10 kgs. of asbestos so mixed with an emulsion prepared from 10 kgs. of resin, 4 kgs. of soda lye and 5 kgs. of ammonia with a portion of the 1800 kgs. of water necessary. After adding the remaining water, the mortar is poured into moulds and hardened by steam.
