Abstract
487,692. Iron manufacture. KUSAKA, K., and ASHIDA, H. Dec. 30, 1936, No. 35692. [Class 72] [Also in Group XI] Sponge iron is manufactured by the direct reduction of iron ore in a rotary electric furnace comprising two inclined steel tubes 1, 2, one of which is supported within the other by bricks 12, and heating-resistances 10 being provided between the tubes. Ore is fed from a hopper 8, and passes through the inner tube 2 to an outlet chamber 9. Reducing gas is supplied to an inlet 13, passes through the spongy iron in the chamber 9, thence in part through the charge, and in part through longitudinal spaces between the bricks 12, by way of holes 14, 15, and is finally burned to preheat the ore in a feed-hopper 8. A layer of asbestos is placed within the outer tube.
