Abstract

472,162. Cathode-ray tubes; electron multipliers. LUBSZYNSKI, H. G. Jan. 15, 1936, No. 1348. [Class 39 (i)] In a television or like system an electron discharge tube has a screen 3 which when scanned by an electron beam from a gun 7 gives abnormal secondary emission ; an object is optically focused on the screen, the coating of which is such that the secondary emission is inhibited a varying degree directly according to the light intensity. The secondary electrons are accelerated and focused on to a two-sided mosaic 5 to give an electron image corresponding to the object, this mosaic screen being scanned by a light beam or cathode-ray 6a to bring the elements of the mosaic to a datum potential and thereby give a television signal. The coating on the screen 3 is formed by first applying to the wall of the tube 1 a transparent layer of aluminium : on the surface of this layer a thin film of aluminium oxide is formed on which is deposited a mono-molecular layer of caesium this being subsequently oxidized. In place of the mosaic screen, a fluorescent screen may be used, the device then acting as an image intensifier; an infra-red ray or X-rays may be used to modify the secondary emission from the screen 3 and a light picture may be obtained on the fluorescent screen. The object may be focused optically on the same side of the screen 3 as that on which it is scanned. The mosaic screen also may receive the electron image and be scanned on the same side. The screen 3 and mosaic 5 may be at an angle to each other, and amplification of the secondary emission by electron multiplication may be effected by means as described in Specification 457,493. Specification 456,728 also is referred to.
