Abstract

472,165. Cathode - ray tubes. FERRANTI, Ltd., and TAYLOR, M. K. March 11, 1936, No. 7297. [Class 39 (i)] To form a magnetic lens in a cathode-ray tube a permanent magnet is used whose inner surface is in the form of a right cylinder a, Fig. 1, or a truncated cone a, Fig. 3. The magnet may be adjustable along the tube b by screw means p, q. It may be supported from a brass cylinder f, Fig. 1, by a rubber inset g which allows the magnet to be rocked about the tube by adjusting screws i, j, the rubber acting as a pivot. A shunt for varying the magnetic field is formed by ferro-magnetic strip c wound on a cylinder of paper impregnated with resin, the shunt being slidable axially ; a wire coil may replace the strip and it may be supported on a brass tube. The magnet may be formed of one or more rings of alloy of iron nickel and aluminium with polepieces of high permeability.
