Abstract
479,937. Pencil holders. MABIE, TODD, & CO., Ltd., JOHNSON, L. W., and SEARS, E. S. Aug. 17, 1936, No. 22639. Addition to 399,592. [Class 146 (iii)] In a pencil holder according to the parent Specification a sleeve is provided to act as guide for the lower end of the collet and derives its functional movement in both directions from the collet, and is slidably mounted and symmetrically supported in a member rigidly secured to the lower end of the pencil lining or casing and is formed with stops to coact with the member to limit the functional longitudinal movement of the sleeve. The collet 2 is formed with a reduced split lower portion provided with serrated jaws 45. The sleeve 1 is split at the upper end so that, by pressing the split sections together, it car be introduced into the bore of a collar 3, ir which it slides between limits provided by its flanges 42, 43. The collar 3 is secured to a lining 5, and is threaded at 11 for the attachment of a split tip 13. The rear end of the collet lies in a bore 25 in the end of a lead magazine 28. The magazine is closed by a socket 33 for a rubber 38a, with which socket engages the metal lining 40 of a cap 39. The collet is pressed rearwardly by a spring 22 arranged between discs 19, 20, and the movement is limited by a ledge 36 on the lining 5 engaging the socket 33. The rear end of the lining 5 is spun over to retain a pocket clip, (not shown). In a modification leads are stored between an inner star shaped lining 47 and an outer lining 48, and are introduced into the collet through a bore 57 in an operating knob 46. Rearward movement of the collet is arrested by the engagement of a ledge 53 or protuberances on the lining 47 with the disc 20. In either construction during the forward movement of the collet the sleeve 1 is carried by frictional engagement and the lead is fed until the sleeve is arrested by engagement of the flange 42, and collar 3. During rearward movement the lead is retained by the tip 13 and the collet is again clamped to the lead when the flange 43 on the sleeve meets the forward end of the collar 3.
