Abstract
Metal-free phthalocyanine pigments are dispersed, with simultaneous softening of the grain and improvement of the clarity and intensity of the shade, by mixing or milling them with dispersing agents in presence of water. The dispersion may be effected at elevated temperature, suitably in a closed vessel and the pigment is preferably subjected to a preliminary dispersion by addition of water to its solution in acid, e.g. concentrated sulphuric, chlorosulphonic or trichlorosulphonic acid. The dispersing agents as preferably also wetting agents. The pigment compositions are suitable inter alia for incorporation in artificial masses, particularly for addition to spinning solutions for the production of artificial silk. The following examples are specified: (1) the metal-free phthalocyanine obtained by heating o-phthalonitrile or 4-chlorophthalonitrile in presence of formamide is dissolved in concentrated sulphuric acid, the solution is poured on to ice, the precipitate is filtered and rinsed and the resulting paste is diluted with water, boiled for 1 hour with an addition of turkey red oil, separated and dried; the product is suitable for incorporation in lacquers and printing pastes; (2) the metal-free phthalocyanine precipitated and filtered as in (1) is suspended in water and boiled and the resulting paste is milled with the sodium salt of a condensation product from formaldehyde and naphthalene-b -sulphonic acid; the product is suitable for use as a wallpaper colour.
