Abstract
475,836. Automatic control systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 6, 1936, No. 30337. Convention date, April 23. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXII] Temperature.-Hot material to be extruded through a die is cooled by atomized liquid in contact with the walls of the die, the amount of cooling medium being regulated by the temperature of the material near the die so as to maintain the material at desired plasticity. The invention is described as applied to presses for lead sheathing of cables. Molten lead is supplied under pressure through passages 14 to a chamber 12 around a core tube 13 through which is fed the cable 23 to be covered, and the lead becomes plastic at 22 in front of the die orifice 20. The die 15 is adjustable by screwing in a carrier disc 16 which is centred in the cast body 11 of the apparatus by screws 21. Water at a constant level in a tank 44 is withdrawn by an air jet ejector and delivered as a fine mist through a pipe 41 to a helical passage 25, an end chamber 27 and an outer helical passage 26 around the die and the resultant steam is discharged to atmosphere at 29. The air blast for the ejector from a fan 40 and the water flow from the tank are adjusted manually by valves 49, 48, and another valve 42 in the air pipe is controlled in accordance with the temperature of the cooled parts by means of a thermocouple 50, connected to an adjustable resistance 53 and a galvanometer 57 having contacts to open or close a relay circuit as shown.
