Abstract
475,139. Making shelves. EVANS, W. J. May 25, 1936, No. 14658. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XIV] A shelf is constructed from a single piece of rigid sheet material, such as sheet-metal or fibre board and comprises one or more flanges bent therefrom at its rear edge for attachment to a wall, and a web bent downwardlv therefrom at either or each end of the shelf and serving as a stay or stiffener. A shelf 1, Fig. 2, is bent up from a sheet blank, and comprises a flange 2 with slots 3 to receive securing screws, and webs 5 forming stays and stiffeners. Flanges 5a receive further securing screws. The edge 7 of the shelf is turned downwardly, and is formed with a retaining rib 8. The inclined edges of the webs 5 are formed with beads 6, adjacent shelves being assembled with the beads 6 interlocking. Alternatively, or in addition, adjacent webs are bolted together. In a modification, one web is replaced by a small lip 9, Fig. 4, which may be bolted to an adjacent web 5. The line 10, Fig. 5, about which the blank is bent to form the web 5 may be inclined, so that adjacent shelves may be connected at an angle to each other.
