[Class 85] A packing-head for wells comprises a tubular housing adapted to take an elongated member through its bore, a packer in the housing adapted to be radially contracted. about said member, a support at one end of the packer, and fabric embedded in the packer and extending out therefrom for connection to the support. In Fig. 1, the two-part body 12 has an inner wall 22, with inclined parts 20, 21, leaving an annular space 18 to receive a piston 29 with pressure surfaces 36, 37, and a further pressure surface 38 open to the well and preferably less than surface 36 so that the same pressure on both surfaces gives downward movement of the piston. A rubber &c. packer 43 is arranged within the piston and fixed at either or both ends to the adjacent surface ; as shown, the packer is fixed by fabric 44 embedded therein and clamped to the wall 22 by screws 46 and a ring 45, the ring having on its lower face annular recesses into which the packer is forced on compression. Upward movement of the piston is limited by flanged screws 50 adjustably threaded to the piston. The piston is operated by gas or fluid pressure, e.g. the well pressure, controlled by a valve 57. In another form, Fig. 3, the body 60 is held to the casing by a threaded sleeve 68 so as to be removable without rotating the body, and the packer 66 is attached to the piston 63 and its upper end engages the tapered bore 80 of body closure 81 ; the closure may have a horizontal flange overlapping the upper end of the packer, the stroke-limiting screws 50 may be omitted and only the fluid supply pipe 55 need be provided. In other forms, the packer, secured either to the body or the piston and contracted by longitudinal compression as in Fig. 1, or by a tapering surface as in Fig. 3, is arranged for contraction by downward movement of the piston.
