Abstract
<PICT:0474181/III/1> In obtaining ammonium nitrate and mixtures containing the same by the interaction of ammonia and nitric acid in a circulating liquor, the vapour generated by the heat of reaction after introducing the reactants into the circulating liquor is utilized for keeping up the circulation of the liquor. As shown in the Figure, the circulation system comprises a boiler B operating under vacuum and an open container D connected by two pipes A and C. The boiler B is connected to a liquid separator H, a water jet condenser J and a vacuum pump K. Ammonia is introduced at F and nitric acid of 42,5 per cent strength is introduced at E into the ascending flow of circulating liquor in the tube A while a pressure of 700 mm. is maintained in the boiler B. The heat of reaction causes a temperature of 90 DEG C. to be attained in the tube A and near the top of the tube the liquor commences to boil, the liberated vapour maintaining the circulation. The temperature drops to 70 DEG C. in the boiler and the liquor descends through the tube C. Ammonium nitrate liquor is withdrawn from the container D. Other components can be introduced with the acid or separately at G. In the production of fertilizers nitric acid may be replaced by admixtures thereof with sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, nitrates, sulphates, phosphates, chlorides and the like. Clay, loess, comminuted peat and the like may also be added at any suitable point in the circulation. Instead of a single ascending tube A and a single descending tube C a plurality of such tubes may be provided. It is also possible to arrange the tubes concentrically one within the other. German Specification 349,330, and French Specification 730,380 are referred to.ALSO:In obtaining mixed fertilizers containing ammonium nitrate by the interaction of ammonia and nitric acid in a circulating liquor while introducing other substances into the circulation, the vapour generated by the heat of the reaction after introducing the reactants into the circulating liquor is utilized for keeping up the circulation of the liquor. The nitric acid may be mixed with sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, nitrates, sulphates, phosphates, chlorides, &c. Clay, loess, comminuted peat, &c. may also be added at any suitable point in the circulation.
