Abstract
Alkali metal fluorides, carbonates or bicarbonates are obtained by treating a complex alkali metal fluoride, e.g. a silico-fluoride, in an aqueous suspension and at elevated temperature, e.g. 100 DEG C., with an insoluble or difficultly soluble carbonate, at least 2 mols of carbonate being employed for each mol. of complex fluoride. Reactions such as the following occur (1) Na2SiF6 + 3CaCO3 --> 3CaF2 + Na2CO3 + 2CO2 + SiO2. (2) K2SiF6 + 2CaCO3 --> 2CaF2 + 2KF + SiO2 + 2CO2. (3) K2SiF6 + 3CaCO3 + H2O --> 3CaF2 + 2KHCO3 + SiO2 + CO2. The resulting alkali metal carbonates or fluorides can be converted into hydroxides, e.g. by treatment with calcium hydroxide. The calcium fluoride and silicic acid produced in the process can be reacted with alkali metal chloride and hydrochloric acid to reform the complex fluoride for re-use in the process. After carrying out the process of equation (2) a third molecule of carbonate can be added to the reaction mixture without filtering, the alkali carbonate formed being then separated. The carbonates of the other alkaline earths, magnesium or lead may be employed instead of calcium carbonate. When working in accordance with equation (2) the resulting potassium fluoride can be reacted with sodium chloride to produce sodium fluoride which is causticized with lime to produce caustic soda. This may be converted into carbonate or bicarbonate by means of the carbon dioxide also produced in the process. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the employment of heavy metal carbonates and also refers to the reaction of potassium fluoride with lead nitrate to produce lead fluoride and potassium nitrate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
