Abstract

In making artificial leather by agglomerating fibrous material, the agglomerant consists of an aqueous dispersion of natural or synthetic rubber containing an organic rubber solvent such as petrol in an amount up to 5 per cent of the rubber content of the dispersion. The dispersion may also contain a rosin ammonia soap in an amount up to 7 per cent of the solid substances and ammonia sufficient to give it a pH no lower than 6,8 is preferably added. A quantity of water-glass sufficient to gel the agglomerant, for example 1 1/2 to 2 per cent, may also be added. The fibres may be mixed with up to one third of their weight of plaster of Paris or Portland cement. To inhibit putrefaction the fibres may be treated prior to agglomeration with 0,5 per cent chromic acid at a temperature of 65 to 70 DEG C. The artificial leather sheet is built up from thin layers of carded fibres which are individually impregnated by spraying or by a roll and doctor blade and dried by pressing on a heated plate or drum.
