Abstract

[Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a power plant made up of a " free stroke " reciprocating piston compressor actuated by internal-combustion cylinders and delivering gas under pressure to a consumer (e.g. a turbine), the scavenging air is wholly or in part supplied by an auxiliary turbo-compressor the supply to which is controlled by the governor of the main turbine. In Fig. 1, a cylinder 1 contains pistons 2, 3, working on a " free-stroke " principle, synchronized by links 4, 5, 6. One end of each piston reciprocates in the cylinder 7 and the other end in an air compression cylinder 8, 9. Air is supplied to these cylinders by the blower 32 through pipe 10, where it is compressed and passed through pipe 15 and inlet ports 17 into cylinder 7. It then forces the waste products and excess air through ports 20 into delivery pipe 22 to main turbine 24 which may exhaust into a heat-exchanger or elsewhere. A throttle valve 34, controlled by the main governor 29 is fitted in a branch pipe 23 which delivers the gases to an auxiliary turbine 30 which may exhaust to atmosphere or to an intermediate stage of the main turbine. The throttle valve 34 of the auxiliary turbine is so controlled that an increase in load opens it and causes turbine 30 to speed up and deliver more air at higher pressure to cylinder 8, 9 and consequently to cylinder 7. An increase in fuel supply to the cylinder 1 then follows with a resulting increase in gas supply to pipe 22. A branch pipe 35 with non- return valve 36 is fitted to pipe 10, so that when the load on main turbine is low and auxiliary turbine shut down, air may be drawn into cylinders 8, 9. Fig. 3 shows the means adopted to allow the governor to function when valve 41 is on its seat.
