455,695. Tanning. GROVES, W. W., 30, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.; Frankfort-on-Main, Germany) Jan. 21, 1935, No. 22945/36. Divided out of 455,603. [Class 76] Hides and skins are tanned in the presence of a basic compound of the general formula wherein X stands for OR2' SR2, NHR3 or NR2R3, R, R1 and R3 stand for H or for radicals of hydrocarbons or substitution products thereof, or R1 and R3 together stand for a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical (in which case the compound will be of cyclic constitution), R2 stands for the radical of a hydrocarbon or substitution product thereof and at least one of the R's comprise a straight or branched carbon chain of at least 5 carbon atoms or a hydroaromatic ring of at least 5 members. Suitable compounds are : imidazoles, imidazolines, imidoethers, imidothioethers and amidines, which may be made, for instance, as described in Specification 448,469, [Group IV].
