[Class 17 (i)] [See also Group XIX] Comprises a base plate having an index line arranged to receive a heel to be measured so that the latter is located normal to the base plate between the latter and a gauge closing to indicate the extent to which a selected portion, the top piece, projects laterally with respect to the index line. Other dimensions such as seat length, seat width, breast width, and top piece width are also indicated. The base plate 10 is provided with a fixed jaw 12 square to the index line II-II and graduated in both directions from this line as zero, and a movable jaw 13, the pointed ends of which move over English and Metric scales 20, 21 parallel to the index line. Arranged to slide at right-angles to these jaws 12, 13 are jaws 14, 15 which are moved simultaneously towards or away from each other from a turn-button 23a through the medium of gears 23, 24. To the opposite ends of a diameter of gear 24 are pivoted the ends of links 26 which are pivoted at the opposite ends to the jaws. A rack moving with the jaw 14 gears with a toothed sector 33 to which a pointer 27 is pivoted, the end 29 of which moves over English and Metric scales 31, 32. In the jaw 13 is pivoted a lever 36 on which slides a block 38 to which is pivoted a scale 39 parallel to the base plate and which may be brought down on the heel. In use, the heel is placed as shown in chain lines Fig. 1 on the base plate and the jaws 14, 15 moved to engage the heel and centre it. The pointer 29 indicates its width. The moving jaw is next moved to measure the length read on scales 20, 21. The breast width may be measured by scale 12a. The scale 39 is then moved to engage the small part of the heel and measure its width. In a modification, the jaws 14, 15 are moved by a spring and sliding wedge device, the pointer being operated by a pin-and-slot device.
