Abstract
A process for the reduction of the viscosity of solutions of chlorinated rubber comprises subjecting them to violent mechanical treatment producing shearing stresses within the solution. For example the solution may be passed, under pressure if desired, through a homogenizer, a colloid mill or a paste mill one or more times; the precise type of machine used depending upon the initial viscosity of the solution to be treated, the solution may be passed first through one type of machine and then through another. The apparatus may be cooled to prevent overheating. Other methods of reducing the viscosity of solutions of chlorinated rubber may be combined with the violent mechanical treatment, e.g., the solution may be subjected to a preliminary or subsequent ageing and/or exposure to light.
