Abstract

449,328. Compound glass. PATERSON, J. H., 68, Bexley Road, Erith, Kent, and MUREX WELDING PROCESSES, Ltd., Ferry Lane Works, Forest Road, Walthamstow, London. Dec. 24, 1934, No. 36985. [Class 140] [See also Group XX] A welders' eye-screen comprises a layer of coloured celluloid or other horny material faced with glass sheets, preferably cemented thereto after the manner of safety glass, the coloured layer being substantially opaque to ordinary daylight. The coloured layer may be tapered so that different areas of the screen have different opacities. In the example shown, a sheet-metal holder 1 has a handle 2 and rabbeted top and bottom frame members 3 holding the screen, which comprises a tapered celluloid layer 5 bonded between glass sheets 4. Packing 6 is provided at the narrow end. A visor 8 is held by corrugated leaf springs in frame members 7, and slides in front of the screen to allow selection of parts having the required density, extensions 9 obscuring the other portions of the screen. The visor 8 may have a plain glass front, and may be controlled by a lever on the handle 2. The celluloid layer may be dyed dark green and may be <1>/64 to <1> /32 inch in thickness.
