Abstract
436,326. Agricultural drainage. DEMPSTER, G. H., 9, Rue Cherif Pacha, Alexandria, Egypt. Sept. 22, 1934, No. 27284. [Class 33] An agricultural drainage system comprises buried sloping porous pipe-lines 2, Fig. 1,having unsealed or open joints 4, each joint being surrounded by a local block 3 of filtering-material. In the construction of the system, the pipes are arranged in trenches and a frame or box 8 which is open at the top and bottom and has slots in its opposite sides for straddling the pipe is placed about each joint ; the box &c. is then filled with cinders, pieces of brick, pottery, lava &c. and removed by its handle 12. The trench is then refilled. Alternatively, vertical tubes 19, Fig. 5, may be placed above every second or third filter and filled with filtering-material 5 after the frames &c. have been removed ; the tubes are then pulled up and the trench refilled. Further, the upstream end of each pipe-line may be brought to the surface of the ground by a flushing- column 15, Fig. 7, which is joined to the pipeline by an elbow 13 set in concrete 14 and which is provided with an inlet 17 by means of which water may be introduced to remove sediment from the system.
