Abstract

435,390. Setting rivets &c. BIFURCATED & TUBULAR RIVET CO., Ltd., 235, Upper Thames Street, London, and PATERSON, L. M., Fox Hill, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. March 14, 1934, No. 8051. [Classes 43 and 89 (iii)] A riveting-machine for operating on work of varying thickness comprises a load receiving or transmitting hydraulic anvil or punch of which the hydraulic pressure is relieved, when the riveting is effected, by a valve which is opened mechanically at a position determined by the thickness of the material. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, an anvil a, positioned below a vertically movable setting tool a', is supported by the rod a<2> of a piston operating in a hydraulic cylinder b which is connected by pipe lines b<3>, b<6> to a reservoir b<5> and a valve casing d respectively. The casing d is slidable longitudinally on a bed d<4> under control of a feeler member d<11> engaging with the work and operating therein is a balanced piston valve d<1> which is reciprocated synchronously with the setting tool a<7>, by connections d<13>, d<14> from the crank operated plunger slide a<6>. As the work increases in thickness, the casing d is raised to advance the opening of an exhaust port d<3> by which the pressure in the cylinder b is relieved to allow the anvil to recede, the port d<3> being connected to the reservoir by a pipe line b<7>. A spring a<19> returns the anvil to normal position on withdrawal of the setting tool. In a modification, Fig. 3, the punch a' is carried by a piston a<8>-a<9> which is slidably mounted in a casing a<10> on the plunger slide and a gauge a<11> controlled by the work opens a valve a<13> in the piston to relieve the pressure when the desired setting is attained On the upward stroke of the cylinder a<10> fluid is drawn into the space above the piston through a spring loaded valve a<20>.
