Abstract
In the production of anhydrous aluminium fluoride, alumina or its hydrate is dissolved in excess of hydrofluoric acid, a double fluoride is formed with ammonia, the double fluoride is precipitated by making the solution alkaline by means of ammonia, and then decomposed by calcination at temperatures up to 700 DEG C. In a modification, hydrated aluminium fluoride is partially dried until it contains about 10 per cent of moisture, treated with a concentrated solution of ammonium fluoride and the mixture heated at temperatures up to 700 DEG C. Ammonium fluoride volatilized may be recovered and re-used. Specification 16887/90, [Class 1], is referred to.
