Abstract
Knocking, stable, and impure benzines are converted into non-knocking and pure products by treatment in the vapour phase with hydrogen under the following conditions:--(1) a partial pressure of benzine vapour of 0,5--3 atmospheres; (2) a hydrogen pressure of 30--60 atmospheres; (3) a temperature of 450--525 DEG C., usually of 460--500 DEG C., and (4) in the presence of catalysts which contain sulphides or oxides of metals of the 5th and/or 6th group of the periodic system, alone or in admixture with sulphides or oxides of heavy-metals of the 1st and/or 8th group, if desired with the addition of non-reducible oxides such as zirconium, thorium or cerium oxide. With benzines rich in hydrogen, especially such as contain naphthenes, the process is one of dehydrogenation; on the other hand, with benzines poor in hydrogen, hydrogenation also occurs. Since the first reaction is endothermic, and the second exothermic, it is an advantage for the purpose more easily of maintaining the temperature, to employ mixtures of both types of benzines. The following are suitable catalysts,--cobalt sulphide, copper sulphide and vanadium sulphide, copper sulphide and tungsten sulphide, copper oxide and molybdenum oxide, nickel sulphide or iron sulphide and tungsten sulphide, nickel sulphide and tungsten sulphide and zirconium oxide or cerium oxide; and the catalyst may be supported on alumina, active carbon or silica, brown coal, small coke, and bleaching earth. Hydrogen or gas mixtures containing hydrogen and nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulphuretted hydrogen, water vapour, methane or other hydrocarbons may be used. Specifications 327,194, [Class 32], and 360,530 are referred to.
