Abstract
422,790. Electrolytic cells. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES., Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. July 18, 1933, No. 20314. Convention date, July 19, 1932. [Class 41] In a mercury-electrode cell for the decomposition of alkali metal chlorides, the body of the cell consists of an elongated trough, the bottom and side walls of which are constructed in one piece of a metal unattacked by mercury, such as iron, the base 1 in contact with the mercury having a bright surface, and the parts exposed to the electrolyte and its decomposition products such as the ends 2 and the sides being provided with a protective and insulating covering 13. Mercury enters at 7, passing beneath a partition 9 forming a siphon seal for excluding impurities, and leaves at 8. A partition 10 is placed at the outlet to exclude gas from the outer part. The base may be of U-or I-section to which the end walls 2 are welded. A flat iron frame 3 is welded over the whole into which the cover 4 supporting the anodes 6 is packed. Electrolyte enters at 11 and fills the cell almost up to the lid, leaving by an adjustable overflow pipe 12. The cell is mounted on adjustable supports 14. Heating or cooling pipes may be welded to the outside of the cell. The cell may be mounted side by side with a similar vessel to which the amalgam passes for decomposition with formation of caustic soda.
