Abstract
428,067. Oil engines. RUSSELL, F. C., Lundy, Warwick Road, Hale, and BRADBURY, J. H., 8, Broadway, Ashton-on-Mersey, both in Cheshire. Nov. 4, 1933, No. 30661. [Class 7 (iii)] Relates to engines having a combustion chamber, in shape substantially a volume of revolution with a valve or valves arranged at the axis thereof and forming the side walls of the chamber which has a relatively short axis, and is connected to the cylinder by an offset passage so that the air charge enters tangentially, the piston being provided with an extension adapted to enter the passage so as to form a restriction through which the last portion of air is compressed at a high velocity. According to the invention, the chamber is of flattened shape, its peripheral wall is concave, its radius of curvature being substantially smaller than the maximum radius of the chamber, the ports and valves being of relatively large diameter. The combustion chamber f communicates with the cylinder through the tangential passage g into which an extension e of the piston enters at the end of the instroke. The peripheral wall h of the chamber is concave and of similar curvature to that of the passage g, the sides being formed by the convex heads of valves i, j. The injector k is offset so as to direct the fuel jet on to a part l which is partly heat-insulated by a slot m which communicates with the cylinder through holes n, by means of which the slot is kept clear. Owing to the offset position of the injector, the chamber is shaped at h<2> to remove a shoulder which would impede the air rotation. The wall h<1> of passage g is slightly inclined to the cylinder axis so as to give, as the piston rises, a decreasing section to the crescent-shaped passage which merges into the concave periphery of the combustion chamber.
