Abstract
417,601. Deadening vibrations in buildings. CANTIERI RIUNITI DELL' ADRIATICO, SOC. ANON., Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino, Trieste, Italy. April 3, 1933, Nos. 10028 and 10029. Convention dates, April 2, 1932 and Feb. 7, 1933. [Class 20 (ii).] A vibration neutralizer for ships and other structures comprising a massive body supported by an elastic system such as springs in a framework which is attached to the vibrating structure is characterized by the provision of manually operable means for enabling the effective mass of the body to be adjusted at will. The massive body takes the form of a tank 1, Fig. 1, disposed between upper and lower frames 35, 36 which are connected at their corners by tie rods 38. The tank carries guiderollers 39 which bear against the tie rods and is supported elastically between the frames by sets of single or double spiral springs 32 which bear against the frames and against a rib extending along each side of the tank. Internally the tank is provided with diaphragms, partitions or tubes which act as baffles to prevent surging of the water with which the tank is filled to the required amount. Inlets 8 and outlet 10 for the water are provided enabling adjustments of the water content of the tank to be made at will. When horizontal vibrations are to be neutralized, the tank is mounted on horizontal runners and the springs are correspondingly arranged. In a modification, Fig. 15, the main portion of the massive body is cellular in structure and the water content is supplemented by weights which are introduced into lateral chambers 232, 233 a layer of wax being poured over the weights to prevent their bumping. Excessive movements of the massive body are checked by spring-pumpers 293 coming against limit stops 204. The massive body may be built up of any number of unit structures united by top and bottom plates.
