Abstract

400,817. Uniting by fusion ; soldering. KANZ, H., 17, Letzigrabenstrasse, Albisrieden, Zurich, Switzerland. Feb. 2, 1933, No. 3222. Convention date, Feb. 4, 1932. [Class 83 (iv).] A copper-containing hard solder or welding material in rod or wire form is composed of two or more different alloys, one at least of which is produced in such form by mechanical shaping so as to form at the joint an alloy of melting point materially lower than that of copper and which cannot itself be made by mechanical shaping. For soldering brass, a low melting point solder containing zinc with 42 per cent of copper, which cannot be obtained in wire form by pressing, rolling or drawing, is produced at the joint by forming by mechanical shaping a wire of a copper zinc alloy containing more than 58 per cent of copper and thus of high melting point and filling or coating it with zinc. Coating may be effected by electrolysis, dipping, sherardizing, or by pulling one or more zinc tubes over the wire. For making a filled wire, a brass tube may be filled with a zinc or zinc alloy wire or with molten zinc or zinc alloy and drawn down into wire form. Such a wire may be further furnished with a metallic coating. Silicon, aluminium, magnesium, or manganese may be added to prevent oxidation or evaporation of the solder. The high melting-point alloy may thus consist of 62À5 per cent of copper, 37 per cent of zinc, and 0À5 per cent of silicon.
