Abstract

406,128. Casting-machines. LUDLOW TYPOGRAPH CO., 2032, Clybourn Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Rudolph, W. J. ; 7052, Oleander Parkway, Chicago, U.S.A.) Feb. 20, 1933, No. 5137. Convention date, Feb. 26, 1932. [Class 83 (i).] The mouthpiece of the metal-pot of a casting- machine is so constructed that the amount of air to be displaced by the molten metal during the casting is reduced to a minimum, and that the mouthpiece is maintained at the same temperature as the molten metal. The arrangement is described as applied to the machine described in Specification 29058/10, [Class 100 (iii), Type making &c.], in which the pot 10, Fig. 1, is connected by a hinge 22 to a rotatable pivot member 23, so as to be movable upwards into contact with the mould 21 and, after the casting, to be swung laterally to shear off the metal. The mouthpiece 13, Figs. 4 and 8, comprises a plate-like portion 24, which is adapted to fit against the upper surface of the throat 12, and a depending fin-portion 27, which extends down into the throat, so as to be in contact with the molten metal when the pot is tilted downwards, and, preferably, at all times. The passage 28 through the mouthpiece tapers in width from the lower end to the plate portion 24, and is preferably flared upwardly in the direction of its length, as shown in Fig. 1. The mouthpiece may be in two longitudinal sections riveted together. The fin 27 reduces the amount of air to be displaced, and also conducts heat to the plate portion 24. To permit the escape of the air normally contained in the mould, grooves 34, Fig. 8, are formed in the upper surface of the mouthpiece on either side of the passage 28 and out of communication therewith.
