392,917. Variable-speed and other friction gearing. MANDLER, E., 13, Rue Washington, Paris. Nov. 24, 1931, No. 32567. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1930. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii).] In variable-speed and other friction gearing of the interleaved type, one set 3 of flexible discs consists of smooth plates, while the other 4, or, if desired, both sets, carries a series of studs 5, which rotate and slide radially in slots in the discs or may lie with radial freedom in one or more continuous rings between concentric relatively movable parts of the main discs. As shown in Fig. 4, the studs may comprise metal centres 15, engaging radial slots 16 in the discs 14, and circular or polygonal outer pieces 17 of friction material and may be held laterally and radially in position by springs. A continuous ring of rollers 5, Fig. 9, may lie between the main disc 14 and a spring ring 20, rigid or flexible arms 22 on the disc engaging the studs at intervals. Speed ratio is varied, Fig. 1, by moving rollers 8, 9, applying axial pressure to the discs, between the shaft centres. Auxiliary plates 6 prevent escape of the studs. In a modification, a set of intermediate discs carries single rings only of studs which engage sets of flexible plates on the driving and driven shafts, change of gear ratio being effected by sliding the set of intermediate discs between the shafts. In a modification of this form, Fig. 15, the intermediate shaft 39 is permanently geared to the driven shaft 2, about the centre of which it swings to change the gear ratio, the necessary axial pressure being supplied by a spring 47 bearing on conical discs 48 carried on spherical bearings 49, 52 and interengaging with rollers 50. The axial pressure may be produced hydraulically, pneumatically, electromagnetically, or by springs or weights, either from without or from within the studs.
