[Class 126.] A gas-fire radiant consists, in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, of a perforated hollow block having a thinwalled front portion or wall shaped to resemble a number of pieces 3 of coal or coke. In the construction shown, the front wall is provided with perforations 5 and the rear wall 2 is pierced to form jagged protuberances 7 ; the rear wall may alternatively be provided with a regular formation of studs. Slits 8 at the top of the block allow the exit of the gases. The block may be formed in short lengths, one upon another, and preferably locking together. The mould for the front is preferably shaped from actual pieces of coal, and the coal-resembling parts of the radiant are preferably blackened. Fig. 4 shows a modification, in which the front 9 of the radiant block represents a single piece of coal and the rear parts are so formed that a number of similar blocks may be assembled to form a substantially continuous block. In the form shown, the front and rear walls 9, 10 are joined by portions 11 perforated in a vertical direction for the passage of the gases, and also if desired provided with lateral perforations 12. The edges of the portions 11 are concave and convex, so that the blocks interlock when assembled ; alternatively, the edges of the rear wall 10 may be formed so as to interlock. In a further modification, adapted to be supported on a substantially horizontal perforated member in the fire, the radiant comprises a thin-walled portion similar to the front half of the block shown in Fig. 1, the whole fire surface being formed by a single radiant or by a number of sections shaped to form a continuous surface when assembled.
