399,132. Making hollow-ware. CARPENTER, T. D., 5, Wykeham Road, Scotstownhill, Glasgow, and METAL CONTAINERS, Ltd., Transport House, Smith Square, London. June 9, 1933, No. 16558. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Flanging; uniting by fusion.-In welding a boss a to a sheet b forming a wall of a sheet metal drum, tank, or like vessel, especially one of stainless steel, an annular corrugation e is formed prior to welding and the boss is recessed at c to receive a flange d about the opening in the sheet b. The welding torch is preferably directed in the direction of the arrow W, Fig. 3, the parts being inverted, and the weld metal being derived from the projecting part of the boss a. A second weld f is made exteriorly of the vessel. The corrugation e is stated to. absorb th; distortion occurring in the welding operation.
