Abstract

Impurities are separated from substantially anhydrous magnesium chloride by keeping the molten salt in repose for a period of not less than two hours and then decanting the supernatant salt from the deposited solid impurities. Residual water may be removed from the chloride by electrolysis as described in Specification 397,479, [Group XXXVI], and removal of water and separation of impurities may be effected simultaneously. Specification 149,670, [Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c., Metallic], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the following subject-matter:--the application of the invention to any anhydrous metal chlorides which are readily hydrolysed such as those of calcium and cerium or other rare earth metal. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
