Abstract

Gases containing relatively small amounts of acid constituents in a gaseous or finely divided liquid or solid form are caused to act on aqueous suspensions of residues from the complete or partial combustion of fossil fuels, whereby the acid constituents are extracted and converted into salts principally of aluminium, iron and calcium. Grate residues or flue dust from the combustion of brown coal or pit coal may be employed. The acid constituents referred to are hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide, nitric acid and silicon tetrafluoride. The process may be carried out at temperatures of 40-60 DEG C. or higher and the gas should be brought into intimate contact with the aqueous suspension, for example by the employment of reaction towers traversed by the gas and irrigated by the suspension or by introducing the suspension in an atomized form. When extracting sulphur dioxide from gases also containing oxygen, residues which contain compounds of iron or manganese may be employed which act as oxygen carriers and result in the production of sulphates. According to examples, (1) a furnace gas containing sulphur dioxide is washed at 50 DEG C. with an aqueous suspension of a flue dust; (2) a gas containing hydrofluoric acid or silicon tetrofluoride is washed with an aqueous suspension of coke ash; (3) a gas containing hydrochloric acid is washed with an aqueous suspension of brown coal ash. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the employment in the process of other substances containing aluminates with or without silicates which have been produced in a fusion or combustion process, for example fused cements or slags such as blast furnace slag. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
