Abstract

394,365. Casting soap. BAKER PERKINS, Ltd., Hythe Road, Willesden, London, WEBB, E. T., Westwood Works, Peterborough, and A N C I E N S ETABLISSEMENTS A. SAVY, JEANJEAN, ET CIE, Avenue Dubonnet, Courbevoie, Seine, France. Sept. 24, 1931, No. 26642. [Class 87 (ii).] In the moulding of soap by an endless chain of moulds travelling under filling means and through a cooling chamber, the moulds are preheated approximately to the temperature of the liquid soap, and preferably are formed with four hinged sides which are opened out to release the moulded cakes, and in addition the cooling is effected gradually and progressively to prevent sudden chilling of the cakes, while the filling may take place in a vacuum chamber. In the plant shown in Fig. 1 the moulds 10 pass over burners or electric heaters 14 or alternatively through a hot-air chamber, and are filled by the nozzles 16. In the baffled cooling-chamber 18, air supplied by the fan 22 passes to the exit 21 in counterflow to the run of the moulds. At the discharging point the inverted moulds are opened and the cakes delivered to the conveyer 23. The pivoted mould walls are opened and closed by the combined axial and rotary movements of bars 27, Fig. 4, moved by fixed ramps sliding each pair of bars simultaneously in opposite directions. The sliding movement opens the end walls 25 through the engagement of collars with the pins 38, and in addition couples the projections 30 with forks 31 on the front and rear walls so that the subsequent rotation of the shafts by fixed pins opens these walls. A vacuum chamber may be provided to surround the feeding-nozzle 16 and may be flanked on either side with similar vacuum chambers operating at an intermediate pressure. Flexible strips 50 on the feeding chamber walls cooperate with the moving walls 39 between the moulds to provide these chambers. The feeding-nozzles 16 may be raised gradually by a crank 44 as the filling progresses. The moulds mav in some cases be formed with fixed walls and a movable bottom which acts as an ejecting-plunger.
