Abstract

394,289. Soldering. SHEVLIN, J. T., 15, South Street, London.-(Sambraus, A.; 57, Bismarck-Strasse, Charlottenburg, Berlin.) Feb. 23, 1933, No. 5613. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Aircraft parts comprising thin tough metal elements such as highly alloyed steel or bronze are secured together by soft soldered joints, and where a number of parts have to be secured together successively the later operations are effected with solders of successively lower melting-points. Fig. 3 shows a joint between the front spar, ribs and skin of an aeroplane wing, the spar comprising a thin metal web 9 and flanges 7 connected together by angle strips 8 soldered to both elements. Holes 15 may be formed in the strips 8 for the introduction of soldering material. The web is strengthened at intervals by profiled pieces 10 soldered on. The skin 11, 11<1> is lap jointed and connected to a plate 14 and is strengthened by ribs 12, 12<1>. Gusset plates 13, 13<1> connect the spar and ribs and the edges of the gusset plates have thin flanges 17 soldered on. To secure flexibility at joints in thin sheets the edges are toothed and tapered in thickness. When a sheet is to remain in tension it is heated by rollers prior to having its edges soldered.. Very thin sheets may be temporarily supported by cementing them to cardboard.
