Abstract

Alkali carbonate or hydroxide and ammonia are obtained by reacting a mixture of alkali sulphate, carbon and lime or calcium carbonate with nitrogen to a high temperature to produce alkali cyanide which is then hydrolysed. The hydrolysis may be carried out at 400-500 DEG C. The carbon may be in the form of coke or coal. The alkali obtained in the hydrolysis step may be subjected to repeated cyanidization and hydrolysis to increase the yield of ammonia. The calcium sulphide also produced in the cyanidization may be converted into hydrogen sulphide by reaction with water and carbondioxide, the hydrogen sulphide being converted into sulphuric acid which is reacted with the ammonia to produce ammonium sulphate. The calcium carbonate also produced in the decomposition of the sulphide is returned to the process. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 246,177 and 250,182, [both in Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.].
