Abstract
384,877. Disposing of fly ash of furnaces. INTERNATIONAL COMBUSTION, Ltd., Aldwych House, Aldwych, London.- (Assignees of Wood, W. R. ; 200, Madison Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) March 24, 1932, No. 8836. Convention date, March 26, 1931. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii).] The ash, flue-dust, &c. which is carried in suspension from pulverized coal-burning furnaces, blast furnaces, &c. is collected and fed into a supplementary furnace or combustion chamber having a slagging bottom and supplied with fuel to melt the ash. In the boiler installation shown the main combustion chamber E is fired with pulverulent fuel at e and has a water screen J and an outlet F across which is located the boiler G. Dust and ash from the boiler is collected in a hopper 42 and led by a pipe 41 to a container 40 and thence through a pipe 44 with a valve 45 to the combustion chamber L of the supplementary furnace K which has a slagging bottom M. Ash &c. from the economizer and other parts of the boiler installation is supplied to the container 40 by a pipe 43. Fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber L by a burner 46 located above the ash &c. inlet pipe 44. The level of the molten slag in the combustion chamber L is determined by the location of a slag spout 49, and the ash &c. falls upon the molten bed. The products of combustion from the supplementary chamber L pass to the main combustion chamber E through a throat 50 where additional air may be supplied to complete combustion. The walls of the combustion chamber L are air cooled at 32, 33, the air being supplied by a fan 34 and the heated air led to the burner 46. Steam generating tubes 36 may be arranged on the upper inclined wall 35 of the chamber L and connected with the boiler circulation through headers 38, 39. Ash or flue dust from a blast furnace or boiler installation may be introduced into a separate furnace and melted, the furnace being preferably provided with steam-generating elements. The ash &c. may be moistened and fed into the furnace by screw feeders or plungers, and may be fed below the level of the slag bed. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the supplementary combustion chamber L<1> is located directly below the main combustion chamber E<1> of the boiler and communicates therewith through the cooling screen 53, the ash &c. being fed at 57 and the fuel at 56. The chamber Ll is air cooled at 54 and water cooled at 55. The slag outlet 59 may be plugged and the molten slag allowed to build up to the level 59<a>, the ash &c. being then fed below the slag level. Specification 368,031 is referred to.
