Abstract

384,325. Signalling by infra-red, heat, and short wireless wave radiation. HAWKER, T. M., Casa Sylva, La Baule les Pins, Loire-InfÚrieure, France. May 4. 1931, No. 13082. [Class 40 (v).] For signalling between ships, or aeroplanes, or between either of these and land stations in which use is made of infra-red, heat, or ultra-short wireless waves, the receiver is adapted to traverse the horizon, and comprises two detecting elements controlling the direction of traverse, so that when a signal is detected, the receiver is automatically traversed and maintained facing the transmitter until signals cease, when the receiver continues to traverse the horizon. The two detecting elements 4, 5 and reflector 3 are mounted on a base 1 rotating about an axis 2 under the control of a reversible motor 20. Radiation reflected from the mirror 3 falls on one or other of the detectors 4, 5 located on each side of the focus, and the currents generated are amplified at 6 and control relays 8 which energize one of the solenoids 9, 10, to actuate the switch 12, 13 and control the direction of the current in the motor circuit. When the detectors 4, 5 are equally influenced the switch 12 is held out of contact with the motor circuit, and the motor stops. Contacts are arranged so that at the limit of the traverse the appropriate solenoid 9, 10 is energized to reverse the motor. Each detector may have a separate reflector, and for ships, several such receivers may be used each traversing a segment of the horizon and each mounted on gimbals or minnions to counteract the motion of the ship. A loud-speaker 7 may be used to give an audible reproduction of the signals received.
